Acknowledging Sex and Gender
The Center of Excellence for Transgender Health (CoE) would like to introduce you to our new Transgender Health Learning Center. We have recently added a training to provide guidance for organizations and clinics to incorporate the "Recommendations for Inclusive Data Collection of Trans People in HIV Prevention, Care & Services." When you finish the Acknowledging Gender and Sex course you will be able to: Demonstrate how to collect the two-step gender and sex differentiation questions, using appropriate language; Demonstrate the use of appropriate language to explain to all patients why they are being asked separate questions about their gender and sex; State at least three reasons why the two-step gender and sex method is important; Describe at least three ways in which cultural competence in transgender care affects health outcomes for this population.
A Practitioner's Resource Guide: Helping Families to Support Their LGBT Children
This just-released SAMHSA resource guide, developed by the Family Acceptance Project, was written to help practitioners who work in a wide range of settings understand the critical role of family acceptance and rejection in contributing to the health and well-being of individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+. This includes professionals who work in primary care, behavioral health, school-based services, family service agencies, homeless and run-away programs, and foster care and juvenile justice settings. Recommendations for Enhancing the Climate for LGBT Students & Employees in Health Professional Schools
The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association has issued "Recommendations for Enhancing the Climate for LGBT Students & Employees in Health Professional Schools." These comprehensive recommendations "offer a wealth of resources for making any health professional school more equitable, inclusive and welcoming from an LGBTQIA+ standpoint. Students, staff, faculty and others involved in health professions education will find the information they need to improve their climate to better support LGBTQIA+ community members, promote general awareness of LGBTQIA+ needs and provide LGBTQIA+ equity." Transgender Health Content in Medical Education: A theory-guided systematic review of current training practices and implementation barriers & facilitators
A new posting on the Wing of Zock innovation blog site calls attention "to a rarely discussed subject in the medical community, yet one that intersects with medicine and patient care intricately: the lives and experiences of transgender people." The essay, by Chelsea Fullerton of NYU School of Medicine, reports, "One promising practice to promote transgender awareness and competency in medical education is through simulated patient encounters."
